Mustangs face rival Tarleton State in final LSC series

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State concludes its 2017 campaign this weekend with a three-game Lone Star Conference series against rival Tarleton State at the TexAnn Softball Complex in Stephenville. 

The Mustangs and TexAnns open up the series Friday at 7 p.m. before a twin bill Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
- Texas Woman's took two of three games in Midwestern State's final homestand last weekend at Mustangs Park
- MSU rallied from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 victory in the series opener
- The Pioneers responded with a pair of wins in Friday's doubleheader to clinch the series victory
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State comes into the final week of the season with an 18-25 overall record and 9-18 mark in the LSC for ninth in the conference standings
- Senior pitcher/first baseman Erin Knox leads the Mustangs with a .347 batting average this season, totaling 42 hits, 22 RBI, 21 runs and 20 walks
- Freshman center fielder Lauren Lindgren has put together a stellar first season with MSU, adding a .343 average with 49 hits, 33 runs, 23 RBI, 14 walks, 11 stolen bases and six home runs in 43 starts
- In the circle, Knox carries a team-best 3.69 ERA with eight wins while holding the opposition to a .265 clip 
- Sophomore Peyton Helton has thrown a team-high 128.1 innings this season, recording a 4.04 ERA and seven wins with 69 strikeouts

SCOUTING THE TEXANNS
- Tarleton State is 30-18 on the season while sitting in sixth in the LSC with a 13-11 record
- The TexAnns debuted at No. 7 in the NCAA South Central Region rankings Wednesday, earning seven wins over nationally-ranked teams this season in No. 1 Angelo State, No. 3 St. Mary's (Texas), No. 6 West Texas A&M and No. 22 Lubbock Christian (Texas)
- Tarleton snapped a five-game losing skid Tuesday with a doubleheader split with Lubbock Christian
- Junior catcher Nyka Wood leads TSU with a .403 batting average, 55 RBI and 17 doubles to rank second in the LSC in RBI and lead the league in doubles
- Junior infielder Marisa Flores and junior outfielder Meghann Wrinkle each add a .350 hitting clip for the TexAnns while freshman outfielder Maddie Quintanar is batting .341 with a team-best 57 hits and 47 runs scored to rank second in the conference in runs
- Junior Haley Freyman has thrown 154.1 innings to lead Tarleton with a 2.59 ERA and 15-8 record while tallying 77 strikeouts, six shutouts and four saves in her time in the circle

INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State carries a 24-10 all-time record against Tarleton State dating back to 2004
- The TexAnns have claimed just one series win over the Mustangs in Stephenville in 2015
- MSU took three of four over Tarleton last season in Wichita Falls
