THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State scored three runs in the sixth inning to rally to a 5-4 victory over Texas Woman's in the series opener Thursday evening at Mustangs Park.
Facing a 4-2 deficit with two outs in the sixth, Midwestern State (18-23, 9-16 LSC) began its comeback with
Erin Knox and
Taylor Mordecai earning back-to-back walks.
Carli Woolsey snapped her six-game hitless streak with a two-RBI double to right center field to knot the game up at 4-4.
Kelsey Knox followed in the next at bat with a single up the middle to plate the eventual game-winning run.
It was a 1-2-3 inning for the Mustangs defense in the seventh with
Erin Knox ending the game with a strikeout.
Texas Woman's (24-16, 12-9 LSC) grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the second with the Pioneers totaling four hits in the frame. With the bases loaded with one out, Morgan Harrison drove in a run for TWU with a single to left field. A force out at home and a popup to shortstop avoided any further damage for the Mustangs.
The Pioneers added three runs in the fourth with Abby Walker and Harrison beginning the inning with singles. A groundout to second for Tara Solomon scored the first run of the inning before Katy Stephens drove in the second with a single down the left field line. TWU capped off the inning with an RBI double by Hazel Puempel to right center field for a 4-0 score.
Mordecai broke up a no-hitter for Walker in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run bomb over the left center field fence with two outs to cut the TWU lead in half.
