Mustangs fall at No. 25 Cameron in LSC opener, 6-3

LAWTON, Okla. – No. 21 Midwestern State suffered a 6-3 setback to No. 25 Cameron in its Lone Star Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

Cameron (12-10, 1-0 LSC) carried the momentum early, taking a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.

The Aggies went in front with the 13th-ranked duo of Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco defeating Ramon Toyos and Dillon Pineda at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

Midwestern State (12-7, 0-1 LSC) answered back with Chris and Denney Norrie taking down Vinicius Santos and Julen Gutierrez, 8-2, on court three for a 1-1 match.

CU closed out doubles play with Bruno Babic and Keiran President edging out Dylan Hall and Angel Palacios, 9-7, at No. 2.

The Aggies quickly grabbed a 4-1 lead in singles play with Velasco and Oyarzun tallying their second wins of the day. Velasco was the first off the court following a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vasudev Vijayaraman at No. 4 before Oyarzun recorded a 7-5, 6-0 win over Hall on court three.

Pineda cut the MSU deficit to 4-2 after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Gutierrez at No. 5 singles. With the Mustangs battling to stay alive on the three remaining courts, 50th-ranked Santos earned the clincher for the Aggies with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 9 Toyos at the top position.

At No. 6 singles, Chris Norrie pushed his win streak to six matches with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over President for MSU's third point.

Babic closed out the match for CU with a super tiebreaker win over Palacios on court two, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.

Midwestern State returns to the courts tomorrow with a 5 p.m. match against Division I Abilene Christian at the Eager Tennis Center in Abilene.
