Mustangs down Aggies in top-25 LSC battle, 6-3

LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State pushed its win streak to 11 matches Monday afternoon as the 15th-ranked Mustangs took sole possession of first place in the Lone Star Conference with a 6-3 victory over No. 24 Cameron in a rivalry matchup at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

MSU's win snapped a three-match losing skid to the Aggies while avenging an NCAA Tournament defeat from a season ago.

Greta Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramirez lifted Midwestern State (17-3, 3-0 LSC) to an early 1-0 advantage with an 8-2 rout over Magdalena Kovinic and Jordan Allison at No. 3 doubles for their 11th-straight win to move to 18-2 on the season.

Cameron (11-10, 2-1 LSC) evened the contest at the top position with the 24th-ranked duo of Zhenia Shviadok and Mathilde Thibaudat handing Maddy Coffman and Bianca Duff their first loss of the season in a 9-8 (4) thriller.

In another tiebreaker on court two, Daria Panferova and Eirini Kontaki carried the Mustangs back in front with a 9-8 (5) victory over the senior duo of Paula Gutierrez and Samantha Wood.

Lazzarotto and Ramirez propelled MSU to a quick 4-1 advantage in singles play, both earning 6-0, 6-0 victories at five and six singles, respectively, with Lazzarotto claiming her 11th-straight match and Ramirez pushing her win streak to 10.

At No. 3 singles, Duff clinched the match for the Mustangs with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Thibaudat.

On court four, Coffman rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to defeat Wood in a super tiebreaker, 1-6, 7-5, 10-6, for her 13th-straight victory.

Cameron closed out the match with wins at the top two courts with No. 47 Shviadok handing Kontaki a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 loss at No. 2 and No. 50 Gutierrez defeating Panferova, 6-2, 6-2, on court one for a 6-3 final.

Midwestern State continues its road swing Wednesday against Division I Abilene Christian at the Eager Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
