Mustangs head to Canyon for Highway 287 Challenge matchup with No. 12 Lady Buffs

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Riding some momentum after a home series win over rival Cameron, who was receiving votes in the national rankings, Midwestern State treks to Canyon for a three-game Lone Star Conference series against No. 12 West Texas A&M Saturday and Sunday at Schaeffer Park.
 
The series gets underway with a doubleheader beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. followed by a Sunday finale starting at 1 p.m. at WT's Schaeffer Park.

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State responded with a Saturday sweep of Cameron to earn a series win over the Aggies for the first time since 2013
- After being shutout 4-0 in Friday's series opener, Erin Knox and Peyton Helton each tossed a shutout to carry the Mustangs to two wins Saturday
- In game one of the doubleheader, the Mustangs struck for six runs in the fourth inning to put the run rule in effect in a 9-0 victory in five innings
- Knox limited the Aggies to just four hits while tying a season-high six strikeouts
- In the finale, Helton threw her third one-hitter of the season while the MSU offense put up four unearned runs in the fifth after a two-out error by the Aggies in center field for a 4-0 victory
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State enters the weekend series with a 14-17 season record and 5-10 mark in the LSC for ninth in the league standings
- Senior pitcher/first baseman Erin Knox leads the Mustangs at the plate with a .353 average, currently on a seven-game hitting streak with 30 hits, 14 RBI, 14 walks and 14 runs scored on the season
- Freshman center fielder Lauren Lindgren is batting .343 while making all 31 starts this season with a team-high 12 multiple-hit games and six multiple-RBI games, totaling 36 hits, 24 runs, 18 RBI, nine stolen bases and five home runs
- Sophomore right fielder Carli Woolsey sports a .323 average in 31 starts on the year with 30 hits, 19 RBI, 11 runs and six homers
- Sophomore designated player Taylor Mordecai has registered hits in six of the last seven games to climb to a .306 hitting clip with 26 hits, 13 runs and 12 RBI this season
- Knox leads MSU in the circle with a 3.02 ERA in 11 appearances this season, holding batters to a .225 average for sixth in the LSC
- Sophomore Peyton Helton has seen approximately 50 percent of the time in the circle for the Mustangs this season with 100.1 innings, compiling a 3.56 ERA with 11 complete games in 15 appearances and a team-high six wins

SCOUTING THE LADY BUFFS
- West Texas A&M has appeared in the top 15 in every NFCA poll this season, currently sitting at No. 12 after recently dropping out of the top 10 following series losses to Tarleton State and No. 2 Angelo State
- WT boasts a 23-6 overall record and 8-4 mark in the LSC for third in the standings
- The Lady Buffs rank in the top five nationally in several statistical categories including first in slugging percentage (.668), second in on base percentage (.467), third in home runs (1.62) and doubles (2.17) per game and fifth in shutouts (10), batting average (.374) and runs per game (8.07)
- Senior infielder Shea Ibrahim leads nine Lady Buffs batting over .300 this season with a .472 average with 34 hits, 28 runs, 26 RBI and 21 walks
- Junior infielder Allie Smith adds a .419 hitting clip for WT with 36 hits, 36 RBI and 21 runs this season
- Junior outfielder Ashley Hardin has totaled 19 extra base hits among her 37 total with 12 doubles and six home runs for a .398 batting average with 34 runs
- In the circle, junior Kilee Halbert carries a 12-3 record and 1.34 ERA with 12 complete games in 16 starts and 83.2 innings to lead the Lady Buffs

INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State leads 22-19 in the all-time series against West Texas A&M dating back to 2006
- The Lady Buffs have claimed nine straight in the series with the Mustangs last picking up a win in the NCAA South Central Regional final in Canyon on May 11, 2014
- The Mustangs won the first nine and 16 of the first 17 meetings in the series from 2006-2011
- MSU last earned a series win over West Texas A&M in 2014, taking two of three from the top-ranked Lady Buffs in Wichita Falls
