Mattinson delivers game winner, @MustangsWSoccer takes down No. 12 St. Edward's in Austin

THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore forward Hanna Mattinson delivered a game-winning strike in the 70th minute to lift Midwestern State past No. 12 St. Edward's, 1-0, for its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in two seasons Wednesday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.

Mattinson dribbled 25 yards before firing off her lone shot attempt of the afternoon from inside the box. St. Edward's goalkeeper Ocoee Wilson managed one hand on the attempt but it was not enough as Mattinson's strike hit the right post and bounced into the net to hand the Hilltoppers their first loss of the 2017 season.

After the Hilltoppers pressured Midwestern State (8-2-0) with seven shots in the first 20-plus minutes, the Mustangs shut down the SEU offense to just one shot attempt in the final 66 minutes to earn their sixth clean sheet of the season. In goal, senior Courtney Burnette made several key stops for the Maroon and Gold with three saves to her stat line.

St. Edward's (7-1-3) came close to striking in the 24th minute with the Hilltoppers totaling three shots in an eight-second span. Viktoria Malmros placed a shot on frame before strikes by Whytneigh Duffie hit the crossbar and wide left.

The Mustangs turned the tables in the second half, outshooting the hosts 9-1 with six shots on target. Just minutes before Mattinson's goal, the Mustangs fired off three-straight shots at Wilson with junior midfielder Taylor Robinson placing two on frame and senior midfielder Destinee Williamson adding another shot on goal.

QUOTE OF THE MATCH
"We got a win against a really good team today. In the first 20 minutes of the game, they (St. Edward's) were playing well and they had a lot of energy. We had to weather a bit of a storm before we relaxed. I think when we started passing we were able to get some momentum. We went into the game knowing we had to be disciplined to keep them in front of us. The back line is getting better and this team is committed to supporting each other." – Head coach Damian Clarke
