No. 16 @MustangsWSoccer falls to West Texas A&M in regular season finale

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS – Freshman Jessica Diaz played a part in each of West Texas A&M's goals Sunday as the Lady Buffs dealt No. 16-ranked Midwestern State a third straight loss, 3-1, at Stang Park.

The Mustangs, which closed the regular season with an 11-6-1 overall mark and 6-5-1 in league play, fell from the No. 2 seed and a bye to the No. 4 seed.

MSU will now host a Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament quarterfinal match Wednesday against Eastern New Mexico at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Greyhounds scored a 2-1 win over MSU Friday night in Wichita Falls.

West Texas A&M earned the season sweep of the Mustangs grabbing the No. 3 seed in the process. The Lady Buffs (7-6-5, 5-3-4) host Texas Woman's in the other quarterfinal matchup Wednesday night in Canyon. WT claimed a 3-0 win over the Mustangs earlier this season.

Diaz converted a penalty kick for her lone tally of the match after MSU junior Brandy Villasana earned yellow card by fouling WT's Khaline Jacob deep in the box in the 36th minute of play.

Jacob expanded the Lady Buffs' lead to 2-0 with her second goal of the season in the 58th minute. Shanelle Arjoon sent a pass down the left channel to Diaz, who found Jacob running down the left side of the box. Jacob chipped the ball over MSU goalkeeper Courtney Burnett to the far post for the score.

West Texas A&M kept the pressure on in the 62nd minute tallying another goal in a similar fashion.

Jacob swung the ball from the center of the field to the feet of Diaz down the left channel. Diaz looped over Burnette to an open Noir Hawash on the far post. Hawash toe poked it in for her fifth goal of the season to give the Lady Buffs a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Midwestern State struck back for a goal in the 65th minute on a long through from Sarah Stewart to Destinee Williamson spring down the left wing. Williamson made one touch to create an angle the beat the WT goalkeeper to the lower right corner for her seventh tally of the season.

Williamson and the Mustangs narrowly missed drawing first blood when her shot from the 10 yards out squarely hit the far post and bounded away.

NOTES
- Destinee Williamson tallied her seventh goal of the season on Senior Day. It was her 32nd career goal putting in fifth on MSU's all-time goal scoring list behind Kelsey Hill (46/2008-11), Becky Athey (43/1995-98), April Lasater (43/1996-98) and Megan Dodson (40/2002-05).
- Sophomore Sarah Stewart notched her fourth assist of the season on a brilliant through ball to Williamson in the 65th minute. It was her first assist since Sept. 15th against Oklahoma Baptist.
- Brandy Villasana's yellow card in the box in the 36th minute was just MSU's fifth caution of the season. The Mustangs are tied for Texas Woman's for the fewest in the Lone Star Conference.
