MIDLAND, Texas -- DeAndre Black and
Tyrique Edwards both caught a pair of touchdown passes and leading scorer
Vincent Johnson returned to the scoring column after a one-week layoff Saturday night against UT-Permian Basin.
And that was just the first half for No. 5 Midwestern State.
In the second half it was
Tyler Milliken doing most of the damage as he caught TD passes from each of the three Mustang quarterbacks.
The Mustangs (7-0, 6-0 LSC) were able to substitute early and often as they rolled to a 66-8 win over the Falcons in Grande Stadium to stay unbeaten on the season and in Lone Star Conference play.The half started with a 29-yard field goal from
Jaron Imbriani to put MSU up early.
Black hooked up with Layton
Rabb on a 94-yard touchdown late in the quarter to start a scoring frenzy.
An interception by DeMarcus Wilson and 45-yard return to the 4 set up a Rabb to Edwards scoring pass to make it 17-0.
The Mustangs got the ball back one more time before the quarter ended and Johnson burst up the mddle, racing 62 yards for his 14th score of the season to make it a 24-0 MSU lead.
An interception by
Jaydon Cunigan got the ball back for the Mustangs early in the second quarter and that set up a 13-yard TD pass to Edwards.
The Falcons interrupted the Mustangs' scorefest with Marquiss Simmons racing 27 yards for UTPB's first score.
Black caught a 42-yard pass from Rabb to close out the second-quarter scoring with the Mustangs up 38-6.
The Falcons' special teams -- which performed well on the night -- came through early n the third quarter as punter Bailey Giffen had his kick downed at the 1. UTPB then trapped Johnson in the end zone for a safety to make it 38-8.
But any momentum gained was lost when the Falcons fumbled the free kick and
Marcus Wilkerson recovered it at the 41.
Two plays later Milliken caught the first of his three scores, hooking up with Rabb on an 18-yard TD.
Milliken caught a 45-yard score from
Javin Kilgo midway through the third quarter and then closed out the scoring in the game when he and
Hagen Hutchinson teamed on another 45-yard touchdown. It was Hutchinson's first action of the season after sitting out last year with a shoulder injury.
Nicholas Gabriel accounted for the other Mustang touchdown as he pounded in from 10 yards out.
Besides a season-high 66 points, the Mustangs also finished with a season-high 667 yards of total offense (9th all-time).
Rabb fnished 16 of 23 for 280 yards and five touchdowns, while Black caught seven passes for 177 yards and Milliken caught five for 110 and the three scores.
The Falcons (2-7, 1-5) finished with 367 yards of total offense with much of that coming late in the ballgame.
Jacob Sherrill led the MSU defensve attack with 10 tackles, while
Steven Rogers,
Jaylon Jackson,
J.P. Cognasi, Zach McMahan and
Jovane Parkinson each had six tackles.
The Mustangs return home to face the Tarleton Texans next Saturday in a 2 p.m. game at Memorial Stadium.
