PORTALES, N.M. – Erin Richburg recorded her third-straight double-figure kill performance with 11 kills while
Aerielle Edwards hit a team-best .438 with nine kills to propel Midwestern State to a 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 15-12) road win over Eastern New Mexico Friday night at Greyhound Arena.
Eastern New Mexico (5-7, 0-2 LSC) used a 5-0 run early in the first set to break a 6-6 tie and pull away from the Mustangs. The Greyhounds kept a steady lead, taking as much as a seven-point advantage before recording a 25-20 win.
Midwestern State (7-5, 3-1 LSC) evened the match with a 25-20 win in the second frame with Richburg delivering a team-high four kills in the set. It was a close set a majority of the way before the Greyhounds used a 3-0 spurt to take a 16-12 lead on the Maroon and Gold. The Mustangs inched closer with a
Christy Carruth service ace bringing MSU to within two at 18-16. A pair of blocks for
Kiley Beaver and a kill for
Meghan Bettis brought the momentum to the visitors before recording the win.
The Greyhounds jumped out in front early as they did in set one, grabbing a 9-4 lead on MSU. A couple of kills for Bettis and a Carruth ace brought the Mustangs within two, however, an 8-2 run for ENMU moved the momentum over to the Greyhounds before posting the 25-14 win in the third set.
Edwards tallied five of her nine kills in the fourth set as the Mustangs hit .286 to earn a 25-20 win and even the match at 2-2. MSU went ahead following a 5-0 run, breaking a 10-10 tie behind the serve of
Sarah Glawe. ENMU came within a point at 20-19 but kills for Edwards and Beaver and an ace for Bettis helped the Mustangs force a decisive fifth set.
The Mustangs put together another strong frame, hitting .294 in the fifth behind Edwards' four kills. MSU grabbed a two-point lead at 5-3 before the Greyhounds evened it up with teams going point-for-point throughout the set. A pair of kills for
Addison Semer gave the Mustangs a two-point lead late before Edwards finished the match with a kill to give MSU the 15-12 win.
