Cavalcante's late goal lifts No. 7 Mustangs over Fort Lewis

THE RUNDOWN

DURANGO, Colo. – Senior Gabriel Cavalcante recorded the go-ahead goal with 4:40 to play in regulation to propel No. 7 Midwestern State to a 3-2 road win over Fort Lewis (Colo.) in the season opener Friday afternoon at Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis overtook the Mustangs early in the second half with a goal from Thomas de Faria 1:15 into the second period before MSU senior Flavio Guzman evened the match at 2-2 in the 57th minute.

With just under five minutes to play, FLC defender Alex Kramer was whistled for a yellow card, setting up a free kick for Cavalcante that led to the game-winning goal.

In the first half, sophomore Jorge DeLeon put the Mustangs ahead in the 19th minute with his first career goal following a header off the corner kick from Guzman for a 1-0 MSU advantage.

The Skyhawks knotted the match up at one apiece less than five minutes later with a score from Churchill Onumonu.

NOTES
*Midwestern State outshot the Skyhawks 16-11 while FLC had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal
*Jorge DeLeon led the Mustangs with four shots and two on goal
*Flavio Guzman paced MSU with three points, recording one goal and an assist in the same contest for the first time in his career as a Mustang
*Noah Fazekas recorded four saves in the full 90 minutes of action for MSU
