THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A first half penalty kick for freshman forward Hanna Mattinson was the difference in a 1-0 triumph for Midwestern State over Fort Lewis (Colo.) in the Mustangs' home opener Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Field.

Midwestern State (2-1-2) fired three shots on target in the opening period before Mattinson drew a foul from FLC's Keisha Green on the left side of the box to set up the penalty kick in the 40th minute. Mattinson's shot soared into the top left corner of the net past Skyhawks goalkeeper Britt Blomso to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.

Fort Lewis (1-2-1) recorded its lone shot on goal less than a minute into the second period with a strike by Shayla Malecki. The Mustangs defense withstood second half pressure from the Skyhawks, who outshot the Mustangs 9-4 in the second period, to earn the second shutout of the season.

NOTES
*Both teams fired 12 shots apiece while Midwestern State held a 6-1 edge in shots on goal
*Senior midfielder Aly Wade and senior forward Nicole Coetzer each recorded a team-high three shots while Wade and Mattinson led the Mustangs with two shots on goal
*Junior goalkeeper Courtney Burnette recorded her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career

STAT OF THE GAME
1 – The Mustangs held Fort Lewis to one shot on goal, the lowest for an MSU opponent since Colorado State-Pueblo recorded just one in a 1-0 MSU win on Oct. 7, 2015 at MSU Soccer Field

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"We knew we were coming together slowly and today was another step in the right direction. I think we saw there's a lot of work to still be done. Hats off to Fort Lewis, obviously in the second half they did a very good job to put us under a whole bunch of pressure. We have to find a little bit more composure especially in the later stages of the game. I'm very happy we got another shutout and limited them to one shot on goal, which is huge with us missing two players that normally play in the back." – Head coach Damian Clarke
