THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State fell short in its third game of the MSU Hampton Inn-vitational despite 15 kills from junior outside hitters Aerielle Edwards and Meghan Bettis and a career-best 37 assists for freshman setter Sarah Glawe in a 3-1 defeat (25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 26-24) to St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

St. Edward's (2-5) claimed a 25-15 first set victory after holding the Mustangs to a -.029 hitting percentage in the opening frame. After an Edwards kill pulled the Mustangs within one at 9-8, the Hilltoppers put together an 8-3 run to push the advantage to 17-11. Midwestern State (3-4) was only able to pull back within five the rest of the way before SEU closed out the frame on a 6-1 spurt for the 1-0 lead.

Bettis posted six kills in the second set to help the Mustangs even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 victory after hitting .350 in the frame. An early 4-0 run helped MSU maintain a comfortable advantage through a majority of the set, fighting off an SEU rally that pulled the Hilltoppers within one at 13-12 before the Maroon and Gold mounted a 4-0 spurt. A pair of kills from junior right side hitter Sarah Garfield down the stretch put the set away after the Hilltoppers had climbed within two at 23-21.

In the third frame, the Mustangs erased an 18-15 deficit with a 5-1 run to take a 20-19 lead and force an SEU timeout. The Hilltoppers came out refreshed, putting together a 3-0 spurt to carry the momentum late before recording a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Back-to-back kills from Edwards gave MSU an 11-5 lead in the fourth set before a service ace from SEU's Avalon Frantz capped off a comeback for the visitors to knot the set at 15 apiece. The Mustangs stretched their lead back out to four at 22-18 before SEU evened the set at 24 apiece. A kill from Alexa McAndrew and an MSU attacking error completed the comeback for the Hilltoppers after a 26-24 win in the fourth to take the match, 3-1.

QUOTE OF THE GAME

"I felt like we were in our own heads a lot. We made a lot of errors out of the gate. It does something to the confidence of a hitter when they hit in the block and into the net a lot. We weren't really recovering from that and we were timid. When we play like that we're just not very good. We talked about getting out of our own heads and staying confident in what we've trained to do." – Head coach Natalie Rawson
