Mustangs down rival Cameron at home, 6-3

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior Kyle Davidson rallied from a first set defeat to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to clinch the match and lift the 11th-ranked Midwestern State men's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over No. 12 Cameron Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

In a matchup of the top two teams in the South Central Region, Midwestern State (14-8) earned wins in two of three doubles matches before a pair of straight-set wins led up to Davidson's clincher to take down the region's No. 1 team and avenge a 5-3 loss in the 2015 NCAA South Central Region Championship to the Aggies.

The duo of senior Zack Santagate and freshman Dillon Pineda put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 following an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. However, Cameron (15-5) answered right back as Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco upset the 19th-ranked pair of Davidson and junior Ramon Toyos on court one, 8-5.

Junior Chris Norrie and freshman Benjamin Neander propelled the Mustangs back in front after coming away with a 9-8 (3) win at No. 3 doubles for a 2-1 MSU advantage.

Toyos and Pineda quickly added to the MSU lead with wins at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. Toyos picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vinicius Santos before Pineda made it a 4-1 contest with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Oyarzun.

Just moments before Davidson's win over Dennis Merdan, Bruno Babic collected a 7-5, 6-2 win for the Aggies at No. 6 singles over freshman Dylan Hall.

Neander stretched the Mustangs lead to 6-2 with a super tiebreaker win on court five, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, before Joao Fazendeiro closed out the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Norrie at No. 3 for the 6-3 final.

Midwestern State concludes the regular season Friday at 2 p.m. with a match against Arkansas-Fort Smith at the MSU Tennis Center. Prior to the match, the Mustangs will honor seniors Kyle Davidson and Zack Santagate as they play their final regular season home matches.
