Mustangs cruise to 8-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 20th-ranked Midwestern State women's tennis team closed out Lone Star Conference action with a dominant 8-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Monday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

Senior Lindsay Nochowicz clinched the win for Midwestern State (16-7) with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles to help the Mustangs finish 2-1 in their LSC slate this season.

The Mustangs swept through doubles play with senior Maddie Schorlemmer and junior Abby White coasting to an 8-0 victory on court three to put Midwestern on the board first.

The 23rd-ranked duo of Nochowicz and freshman Eirini Kontaki rallied from a 6-1 deficit for a 9-7 triumph at No. 1 doubles before freshman Greta Lazzarotto improved to a team-best 21-2 record, teaming up with sophomore Amy Clifton to earn an 8-5 win on court two for the doubles sweep.

Schorlemmer, ranked 27th in the national singles rankings, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mariaxi Herrera at No. 1 to lead up to Nochowicz's clincher. White extended the MSU lead to 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6, moving to a 15-3 mark on the season to lead the Mustangs.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (5-15) earned its lone point of the afternoon by retirement with Clifton leading 6-3 before concluding the match.

Kontaki and Lazzarotto brought the Mustangs home with a pair of straight-set wins as Kontaki posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 while Lazzarotto recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.

Midwestern State next hosts Arkansas-Fort Smith for Senior Day Friday at 10 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Center. The Mustangs will recognize seniors Maddie Schorlemmer, Lauren Pineda and Lindsay Nochowicz prior to the match.
