Cameron takes series with run-rule win over Mustangs in finale

LAWTON, Okla. – For the first time since April 2009, the Midwestern State softball team was shutout in back-to-back games following a 9-0 run-rule defeat in five innings to Cameron in the series finale Saturday afternoon at McMahon Field.

Sonora Zukerman paced Cameron (32-17, 17-11 LSC) with a 2-for-3 outing at the plate with three RBI while tossing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks to improve to 10-5 on the season.

Cameron took the series over Midwestern State (26-26, 11-17 LSC), 3-1, following Saturday's sweep that included a 1-0 eight-inning victory over the Mustangs in game one. The Mustangs were shutout for the first since the 2009 Lone Star Conference Championships when they fell to Abilene Christian (3-0) and Central Oklahoma (1-0).

Cameron grabbed a 2-0 advantage early on with left fielder Breezy McComas sending a pitch over the center field fence for a two-run homer. The Aggies added to their lead in the second, plating three unearned runs off a double to center from shortstop Carly Allerheiligen for a 5-0 ballgame. Catcher Chelsea DeLong led off the inning with a double to right center before an infield error and a walk loaded the bases for the Aggies.

A pair of walks and a single led up to Zukerman's three-RBI double to center in the fourth to stretch the Cameron advantage to 9-0 and force Midwestern to its final three outs.
The Mustangs offense was limited throughout the game, only putting multiple runners on in the second and fifth innings. A total of four Mustangs recorded one hit on the day.

Redshirt freshman Peyton Helton was saddled with the loss, allowing five hits, four earned runs and three walks with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings to fall to 8-9 on the year.

Midwestern State will battle for the final spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament next weekend when the Mustangs play host to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the final series of the regular season. The two teams take the field with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. before a twin bill Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mustangs Park.
