Mustangs snap skid with sweep over Metro State

DENVER – No. 12 Midwestern State snapped a three-match losing skid Tuesday evening with a 9-0 road sweep over Metro State at the Regency Athletic Complex.

It didn't take long for Midwestern State (7-4) to get on the board as the 20th-ranked doubles team of senior Kyle Davidson and junior Ramon Toyos claimed an 8-1 win at the top position to get the Mustangs going. Junior Chris Norrie and freshman Radu Popa added an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles before senior Zack Santagate and freshman Dillon Pineda pulled out a 9-8 (5) win on court two for the sweep.

Norrie clinched the match for the Mustangs at No. 3 singles after 27th-ranked Davidson earned a straight-set win on court one.

The Mustangs allowed Metro State (5-9) to walk away with just one set win in singles action with Popa dropping a 7-5 decision in the first set before rallying for a 5-7, 7-6 (3), 10-1  super tiebreaker victory over Marty Lukosiunas. Toyos, Pineda and freshman Benjamin Neander also collected singles wins in the sweep over the Roadrunners.

Midwestern State concludes its Colorado road trip Friday with a doubleheader against in-region foe Colorado State-Pueblo and NCAA Division III Colorado College beginning at 12:30 p.m. (CT) at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex.
