Two-run sixth propels Mustangs to 2-1 win over TexAnns

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A two-run sixth inning propelled Midwestern State to a 2-1 victory over Tarleton State in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Mustangs Park.

Midwestern State (20-17, 6-9 LSC) spoiled a no-hitter for pitcher Haley Freyman in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs on four hits to take a 2-1 lead on the TexAnns.

Tarleton State (15-15, 2-9 LSC) struck first in the third inning off a double from third baseman Savannah Stech to score center fielder Melody Mayse, who had reached on a one-out fielder's choice before stealing second.

Senior center fielder Haley Howerton recorded a leadoff single to get the Mustangs started in the sixth before advancing to second on the play after a throwing error by shortstop Delaney Wayland. A single for junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes followed by a steal put two runners in scoring position for Midwestern with no outs. A one-out single for junior first baseman Erin Knox scored Howerton before a RBI single for junior designated hitter Baylee Voigt plated the go-ahead run for the Mustangs.

The TexAnns put two on with two outs in the top of the seventh on a single and fielding error but freshman pitcher Makenzi Harris fanned right fielder Katelyn Conlee for the final out of the game.

Harris improved to 7-3 on the season with five strikeouts while allowing seven hits and one walk.

Freyman dropped to 12-11 on the year after allowing four hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
