WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Sophomore
Krishawn Crockett enjoyed one of the best performances of her young career Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, but a 10-minute second-half field goal drought spelled doom for Midwestern State in a 67-59 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce.
The Mustangs lost for the fifth consecutive time to fall to 4-17 on the season and 3-8 in Lone Star Conference play, while Texas A&M-Commerce extended its winning streak to three games to improve to 13-10 and 6-5.
Midwestern plays host to No. 6 West Texas A&M Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Mustangs rode Crockett's hot start and 10-2 run to lead 15-9 when the Humble Summer Creek High product hit a layup with 3:50 to play in the first.
Crockett scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the opening frame on her way to a solid all-around effort also finishing with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in 27 minutes.
The Mustangs shot 15-of-31 (48.4 percent) from the floor in the first half hitting 3-pointers at the end of each frame. Jennifer Sissel's triple game MSU a 21-18 edge at the end of the first, while
Anni Scholl connected on another at the end of the first half to tie the game.
Crockett connected on two 3-pointers in the third period with the second one coming at the 4:20 mark to pull MSU to within 50-49.
MSU would not score a field goal until
Whitney Taylor hit a jumper with 3:47 to play in the fourth -- a span of 10 minutes and 33 seconds.
Still, the Mustangs stayed close taking leads on a
Katie Brown free throw with 2:20 to go in the third then led 53-52 after Tori Tripp connected on a pair of charity tosses at the 1:38 mark of the third.
Texas A&M-Commerce's Amari Jones put the Lions ahead for good with a layup at the third quarter buzzer.
It took three minutes for either team to score in fourth quarter before the Lions used a slow 7-0 run to push the lead to eight before Taylor's first field goal of the pulled the Mustangs to within 61-55.
The Mustangs could pull no closer than four the remainder of the way.
Junior guard Krystal Pickron led a group of four Texas A&M-Commerce players scoring in double figures with 15 points and five rebounds.
MSU junior forward Jennifer Sissel chipped in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out in 36 minutes.
