Mustangs drop home contest to No. 10/7 West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 10/7 West Texas A&M shot 54.4 percent from floor and outscored Midwestern State 44-22 in the paint en route to a 74-48 win in a Highway 287 Challenge matchup Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Senior forward Zantaya Davis led the charge for West Texas A&M (21-2, 10-2 LSC) with 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds. Senior guard Michaela Neuhaus also reached double figures with 12 points on 5-of-7 from the floor while junior guard Sasha Watson contributed eight points and a team-high eight assists and three steals.

A three-point play by senior guard Kathryn Odom gave Midwestern State (4-18, 3-9 LSC) its lone lead of the contest in the opening seconds of the game, before the Lady Buffs took control from there and went on top by as many as 14 points in the opening period.

WT increased its lead even further in the second quarter after holding the Mustangs to a 14.3 shooting percentage (2-of-14) for a 38-20 halftime score.

Midwestern saw its best period of the night come in the third, shooting 57.1 percent (8-of-14) to outscore the Lady Buffs 20-18 in the quarter. Led by the play of sophomore guard Krishawn Crockett, who scored all 12 of her points in the third, the Mustangs reeled off an 11-3 run in a two-minute span to pull within 11 at 51-40 with 2:51 remaining in the period.

However, the Lady Buffs would not let their lead dwindle any further, putting together a 13-0 spurt during a seven-minute scoring drought for the Mustangs that carried from the 2:51 mark in the third quarter until 5:51 remaining in the game. The Lady Buffs would increase their lead to as many as 27 down the stretch before claiming the 74-48 victory.

Sophomore guard Whitney Taylor paced the Mustangs with 15 points, having now scored in double figures in 10 of her last 11 contests. Senior forward Katie Brown led MSU on the glass with seven boards while Odom recorded a team-best three assists and matched Crockett with two steals to lead the Mustangs.

Midwestern State begins a two-game road trip Saturday as the Mustangs travel to Portales, N.M., for a 3 p.m. (CT) tip against Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena.
