GULF SHORES, Ala. – Junior pitcher
Erin Knox threw a complete game in the circle while going 2-for-2 with two RBI at the plate to lift Midwestern State to a 5-4 win over Lee to wrap up a busy first day at the Gulf Coast Invitational.
Midwestern State (4-4) took on half of its six-game weekend slate with a triple-header Friday, finishing the day with a 2-1 record at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The Mustangs came ready to play in their final game of the day as junior designated hitter
Baylee Voigt lifted a pitch over the left field fence to bring in two runs and put MSU ahead 2-0 in the top of the first.
Lee (3-2) put together a three-run frame in the third as a hit by pitch, single and walk loaded the bases with no outs for the Flames. A fielding error on the Mustangs plated Lee's first run of the day before a fielder's choice to short knotted the game up at 2-2. The Flames went on top with two outs in the inning with another error by the MSU infield.
However, the Mustangs answered in the bottom half of the inning as two walks and a pair of steals put runners in scoring position for Midwestern. Knox then drove a pitch into left field to score Voigt and junior left fielder
Taylor Bermudes for a 4-3 MSU lead.
Lee tacked on a run in the top of the fifth with two singles and a walk to even the contest at 4-4.
The Mustangs answered right back once again in the bottom portion of the inning as a single and walk put two runners on with one out for the Maroon and Gold. After a strikeout, freshman right fielder
Taylor Mordecai drove in junior pinch runner
Jennifer Quintero with a single to left field for the eventual game-winning run.
Senior third baseman
Katelyn Vinson also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Voigt joined Knox with two RBI on the night while leading the Mustangs with two runs.
Knox allowed five hits and three earned runs while fanning three in her first full outing of the season, improving to 2-0 on the season.
Midwestern State returns to action tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. against North Alabama before a matchup with McKendree (Ill.) at 4:45 p.m.
