No. 7 Rambelles run past Mustangs in LSC home opener

THE RUNDOWN

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Taylor Dorsey scored 21 points and added five assists and five steals to pace No. 7 Angelo State to a dominant 84-47 win over Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference home opener for the Mustangs Thursday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Dorsey scored 10 of her points in the opening quarter and 18 in the first half, helping Angelo State (7-0, 3-0 LSC) open up a 23-10 lead after the opening period following a 7-0 run to close out the quarter. The Rambelles continued to pull away in the second with a pair of Bethany Ross free throws giving ASU a 20-point edge with 3:16 remaining in the half. Angelo State maintained a 20-point advantage at the half, holding Midwestern State (2-6, 0-3 LSC) to a 22.6 shooting percentage to claim a 41-21 lead at the break.
 
The Rambelles stretched their lead even further in the second half, taking their largest lead of the contest at the 7:35 mark in the fourth with a 72-34 lead.
 
Freshman guard Courtney Kerr was a bright spot for the Mustangs off the bench in the second half, totaling seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in the third quarter in just five minutes of action.
 
NOTES
- Midwestern State fell to 0-3 in conference play for the first time since the 2009-10 season
- The Mustangs were held to a season-low 27.4 shooting percentage including 20 percent from three-point range and 50 percent from the charity stripe
- Angelo State shot an MSU opponent-best of 50 percent from the field, knocking down 9-of-19 (47.4%) from long range and hitting 19-of-24 (79.2%) from the free-throw line
- The Rambelles held a 38-24 advantage in the paint and 20-11 in points off turnovers
- Kristin Rydell, Liz Cathcart and Courtney Kerr recorded seven points apiece to lead MSU
- Whitney Taylor pulled down a team-high seven rebounds
- Chenelle Pelle added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Rambelles while KeAnna Kelly also reached double figures with 10 points
