Hicks' first-half explosion keys rout of Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. -- True freshman Logan Hicks canned three triples in the first half to help No. 20 Midwestern State bury host Rogers State (Okla.) early and coast to an 81-63 win the finale of the RSU Conference Challenge Saturday at the Claremore Expo Center.
 
The Mustangs, who improved to 2-0, take on Adams State (Colo.) in its home opener Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
Hicks hit back-to-back triples midway through the opening half to extend the Mustangs' advantage to 28-13, then drilled another 3-ball in the final minute and beat the buzzer with a layup as MSU led 41-23 at halftime.
 
The Temple High product hit six of his eight shots in the first half with three 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 19 points in just his second collegiate game.
 
Midwestern outscored Hillcats by a 24-7 margin for the first 10 minutes of the second half to push the lead to a game-high 35 points when Sheldon Hagigal buried two free throws to make the score 65-30 with 10:37 to play.
 
Hagigal hit three 3-pointers of his own to finish with 13 points, while junior forward Igor Ibaka finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Senior guard Pat Smith notched 12 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Mustangs.
 
Junior guard Devante Pullum pitched in eight points and dished out six assists, while Brandon Neel and Nick Powell contributed seven points each.
 
J.D. Tisdale paced Rogers State with a game-high 20 points as the Hillcats dropped to 1-1.
