THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Senior
Sheldon Hagigal poured in a career-high 27 points as 20th-ranked Midwestern State overcame a torrid start by Adams State to roll to a 103-88 win Monday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Â
The Mustangs improved to 3-0 for the second straight year and for the fifth time in the
Nelson Haggerty era, while ASU dropped to 0-3.
Â
The Grizzlies came out firing knocking down their first five shots from beyond the arc to roll out to a 15-2 lead, but Hagigal and true freshman
Logan Hicks sparked Midwestern off of the bench combining for eight triples before half to spur a 26-4 MSU run.
Â
The Mustangs pushed the advantage to 53-40 when Hicks buried his fourth 3-pointer of the first half with 52 seconds to play.
Â
Junior guard
Devante Pullum fired in two more 3s before intermission as the Mustangs combined for double-digit makes from beyond the arc for the third straight game.
Â
Adams State wouldn't go away in the second half as the Grizzlies cut the MSU lead to single digits on four occasions, but each time the Mustangs had an answer.
Â
ASU impressed on the offensive end of the floor hitting 50.9 percent from the field with 13 3-pointers of its own and even won the rebound battle with a plus-6 margin, but couldn't wrest the lead away from the hot shooting Mustangs.
Â
Pullum finished with three 3-pointers on his way to an 18-point, 7-assist performance, while Hicks notched double figures for the second consecutive game going for 17 points and five assists.
Â
Senior forward
Magnus Richards added to MSU offensive groove with a season-best 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Â
Brandon Umoru notched a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace Adams State.
