WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior guard
Kristin Rydell led four players in double figures with 15 points on a career-best five three-pointers to lead Midwestern State to a season-opening 72-55 win over Adams State (Colo.) at the Ashbrook Classic Friday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Midwestern State knocked down 12 three-pointers on the night to tie for the third most triples in a single game in program history.
Rydell connected on her first three treys to help Midwestern State open up a 14-7 lead less than five minutes into the game. The Mustangs knocked down 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the period as junior guard
Whitney Taylor and sophomore guard Anni School also connected from deep to help the Mustangs to a 20-14 advantage over Adams State (0-2) after one quarter.
The Mustangs stretched their lead to double figures at 10 following a layup by freshman forward Liz Cathcart at the 8:05 mark in the second for a 28-18 lead. A three ball for Taylor midway through the period gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the half at 15 before taking a 39-28 advantage into the locker room.
Midwestern was held to just one field goal in the first five minutes of the third period before a Taylor triple stretched the MSU lead back out to 10 at 47-37.
The Grizzlies pulled within singles digits on a pair of occasions in the third quarter but Midwestern began to pull away in the latter part of the game with a Rydell three-pointer giving the Maroon and Gold their largest lead of the contest at 72-51 with just over a minute to play.
NOTES
- Midwestern State's 12 three-pointers were the most for the Mustangs since hitting 12 in February of 2015 against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville
- Rydell was joined in double figures by Taylor (11), Cathcart (10) and senior forward

- Adams State finished with a 35.7 shooting percentage led by Nicole Broyles-Mortensen's 18 points
