THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State outscored Texas A&M International 28-9 in the second quarter en route to a dominant 76-53 win over the Dustdevils in the Ashbrook Classic finale Saturday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Midwestern State (2-0) had five players score at least eight points in the contest with freshman forward Liz Cathcart pacing the team with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-2 lead on Texas A&M International (0-2) in the opening period following a Cathcart jumper midway through the quarter. MSU matched its largest lead in the first at seven late in the period after a layup by sophomore guard

A 7-0 run to begin the second quarter set the stage for the Mustangs with sophomore guard
Montoria Tripp recording all eight of her points in the first 3:54 of the quarter to help MSU double up the Dustdevils at 30-15 with six minutes left in the half. The Mustangs held TAMIU to just one field goal in the final 5:50 of the half as MSU went on an 11-0 run with freshman guard

The TAMIU drought continued in the early minutes of the third quarter with MSU stretching its lead to 32 just two minutes into the period following a basket by senior forward

McKenna Villegas gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the contest at 72-36 with 8:14 to play. The Dustdevils outscored the Maroon and Gold 17-9 in the final period but were only able to pull as close as 23 points down the stretch.

- In addition to her team-high nine points, Cathcart dished out a team-best six assists while also adding six boards to her stat line

- The Mustangs owned a 38-20 edge for points in the paint while holding a 22-8 advantage in points off turnovers and 15-4 margin in second chance points
