Mustangs pick up key win over Angelo State on Senior Day

THE RUNDOWN

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State earned a crucial win in Lone Star Conference play Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Field with a 2-0 victory over Angelo State as the Mustangs took control of third place in the league standings following a season sweep of the Rambelles on Senior Day.
 
Junior forward Destinee Williamson tallied the game-winning goal against Angelo State (10-5-1, 6-4-0 LSC) for the second time this season with the go-ahead strike just 2:15 into the match from the middle of the box off a pass from senior midfielder Abbey Barnum.
 
Junior keeper Courtney Burnette helped Midwestern State (9-5-2, 6-4-0 LSC) record a clean sheet in the opening period by collecting three of her five saves in the first 45 minutes of action.
 
The Rambelles managed one shot on goal in the second half before senior forward Nicole Coetzer gave the Mustangs a 2-0 cushion with a rocket from the right side from 22 yards out in the 73rd minute.
 
Angelo State was only able to attempt one more shot on target in the match before the Mustangs collected their seventh shutout of the season while also handing ASU its first road loss.

NOTES
*Midwestern State swept the regular season series against Angelo State for the first time in program history since the teams began playing twice in a season in 2011
*The Mustangs also recorded a 1-0 win over the Rambelles in San Angelo back on Sept. 23
*With the win, Midwestern State and Angelo State both sit in third place in the LSC with 18 points with MSU holding the advantage after the season sweep while Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M sit atop the conference with 24 points
*Angelo State led 10-8 in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal
*Abbey Barnum led the Mustangs with three shots while Hanna Mattinson added a pair of attempts
*Prior to Sunday's kickoff, the MSU women's soccer program honored Aly Wade, Abbey Barnum, Nicole Coetzer, Liz Navarette, Katie Huff, Lauren Fambrough, Haley Britton and Kayla Ramos as they played their final game at MSU Soccer Field
