THE RUNDOWN
CANYON, Texas – Midwestern State hit a season-low .027 attack percentage in a 3-0 loss to West Texas A&M in a Highway 287 Challenge match Saturday afternoon at the WTAMU Fieldhouse.
West Texas A&M (14-9, 9-4 LSC) controlled the momentum early, hitting .257 in the opening set while eight hitting errors for the Mustangs resulted in a -.088 hitting clip to begin the match. The Lady Buffs used an 8-2 run out of the gate while receiving four kills apiece from Cori Haley and Larami Lancaster to claim a 25-12 first set win. Midwestern State (11-13, 5-8 LSC) pulled back within three at 8-5 following a service ace for
Meghan Bettis before the Lady Buffs stretched their lead again with a 7-0 spurt to take the frame.
An 11-2 run to begin the second set helped the Lady Buffs control the momentum throughout the game. The Mustangs were only able to come as close as six points in the frame before WT recorded a 25-16 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Lady Buffs hit a match-best .281 percentage in the third set, building a sizeable advantage in the early going after a 14-3 start. The Mustangs responded after the strong play by WT in the first half of the set, answering with a 7-0 run behind the serve of Bettis and play of Edwards, who recorded three kills during the run to pull MSU within four at 15-11. The Mustangs came within three points on three separate occasions, but kills for Selena Batiste and Elisa Bentsen down the stretch helped WT earn a 25-21 win.
