THE RUNDOWN

LUBBOCK, Texas – Midwestern State totaled a season-high 15 blocks behind a career-best 11-block performance from junior middle blocker Addison Semer, but the Mustangs fell to Lubbock Christian in a five-set heartbreaker Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center.

Midwestern State (8-11) recorded a .320 hitting percentage with no errors in the opening frame to take a 25-13 victory as the Lady Chaps committed 11 attack errors in the first set. The Mustangs broke away early in the set with a 6-0 run to take a comfortable 13-5 advantage. Another 6-0 spurt for the visitors put the set out of reach for Lubbock Christian (11-8) at 22-9 before going on to record the win.

LCU used a 6-1 run to break a 10-10 tie in the second set, keeping the Mustangs at a distance before the Maroon and Gold pulled back within two. After back-to-back kills from Sarah Garfield to make it a 20-18 score in favor of the Lady Chaps, the home team closed out the set on a 5-0 run to take the frame, 25-18.

Midwestern committed 10 hitting errors in the third set while managing just a .045 hitting percentage to suffer a 25-20 loss. LCU pulled away midway through the set with a 4-0 run to grab a 14-7 advantage following a kill from Ariel Froeschl. A 6-1 MSU run capped off by a block from Semer and Meghan Bettis brought the Mustangs within two before the Lady Chaps pulled away down the stretch to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Mustangs forced a decisive fifth set, going on a 10-1 run behind the serve of Garfield and Bettis to take an 11-5 lead in the fourth. LCU was only able to pull back within four before MSU distanced itself in the latter part of the frame for a 25-16 win.

Aerielle Edwards hit .667 with six kills in the fifth to lead the Mustangs offense as MSU took a 7-5 lead following an LCU attack error to force a timeout for the Lady Chaps. It was point-for-point the rest of the way before back-to-back kills for Froeschl gave LCU a 14-12 lead. Following an MSU timeout, a kill for Edwards fended off one LCU match point before Cory Jo Martin lifted the Lady Chaps to a 15-13 win.
