Mustangs win fifth straight with 2-0 shutout of Rogers State

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – While battling a heavy downpour of rain for a majority of the match, Midwestern State pushed its winning streak to five Thursday night at MSU Soccer Field with a 2-0 win over Rogers State to remain in a tie for first in the Heartland Conference standings.
 
Senior midfielder Flavio Guzman lit up the scoreboard for Midwestern State (10-2-1, 8-1-0) just before halftime with a shot from inside the box off a cross from freshman forward Jacob Hernandez for a 1-0 MSU lead in the 40th minute.
 
Midway through the second period, the Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 with senior forward Christian Okeke recording his team-leading seventh goal of the season with a strike from the left side of the box off a pass from junior defender Patrick Fitzgerald.
 
The Mustangs defense came away with their sixth shutout of the season, limiting Rogers State (6-4-3, 3-4-2) to just three shots on goal and no corner kicks for the evening.

*Midwestern State clinched its 18th-straight 10-win season Thursday
*The Mustangs remained in a tie with St. Edward's for first place in the Heartland Conference with five regular season games remaining
*The Mustangs improved to 5-0 in the series against Rogers State with a season sweep of the Hillcats
*Midwestern held a 22-7 lead in shots and 8-3 advantage in shots on goal
*The Mustangs recorded a season-high 13 corner kicks while holding the Hillcats to none
*Flavio Guzman and Jorge DeLeon each tallied six shots to lead the Mustangs while Guzman finished with a team-best four shots on goal
*Noah Fazekas made three saves while collecting his fifth clean sheet of the season
