Mustangs flex depth to down No. 21 Northeastern State, 5-4

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 14 Midwestern State flexed its depth to hold off No. 21-ranked Northeastern State (Okla.) 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs claimed their sixth consecutive win to improve to 12-5 on the season while snapping NSU's six-game winning streak as the Riverhawks fell to 12-4.

Junior Madeline Schorlemmer and sophomore Paige Boykin battled back from a 7-6 deficit at the No. 3 doubles' position to edge Valeriia Efimenko and Easton Parker 9-8 in a 7-3 tiebreaker in what proved to be the difference in the match.

The Mustangs were able to come away with a 2-1 edge following doubles play as juniors Lauren Pineda and Lindsay Nochowicz came away with an 8-4 win over Barbora Jirickova and Molly Worden at the No. 2 spot.

MSU made quick work at the bottom two singles flights as Boykin rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jirickova at No. 5 and Nochowicz dominated Parker 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Riverhawks pulled to within 4-3 with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 as Kristina Savchenkov beat Kayla Casey 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and Patricia Husakova defeated Taylor Coffman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.

But the Mustangs got the clincher from sophomore Courtney Anderson, who rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Worden at No. 4.

Schorlemmer battled back to force a super tiebreaker against Efimenko at the No. 3 spot before falling 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 10-8.

Midwestern takes on Texas State Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex in San Marcos. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m.

NOTABLES

- Sophomore Courtney Anderson (Cypress, Texas / Cypress Ranch HS) claimed her seventh straight win to improve her career mark to 32-4 in singles dual play.
- Sophomore Paige Boykin (Richmond, Texas / Foster HS) also claimed her seventh consecutive win to improve to 13-3 this season and went to 33-5 over the past two years in singles play.
- Junior Lindsay Nochowicz (Powder Springs, Ga. / Mount Paran Christian School (Tampa)) rolled to 12-3 this season primarily out of the No. 6 position and has won each of her last five matches.
- The Mustangs have won the last six times out in the bottom two doubles' spots as Nochowicz and Lauren Pineda (Allen, Texas / Allen HS) are 10-3 at the No. 2 spot and Boykin and Madeline Schorlemmer (Argyle, Texas / Argyle HS) are 11-3 at the No. 3 position.
- Midwestern State improved to 5-4 against nationally ranked opposition this season and are 10-4 against regionally ranked foes.
