Mustangs fall just short of upsetting Division I Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Midwestern State came within a tiebreak of upsetting Division I Texas State before falling 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs' six-match winning streak came to a close as MSU fell to 12-6 on the season.

Midwestern takes on a pair of Lone Star Conference foes next week playing host to Tarleton State Tuesday at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. The Mustangs take on Cameron Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Lawton.

Senior Taylor Coffman locked in a tight contest with TSU senior Monica Pieratt at the No. 2 position as the fellow Houstonians split the first opening two sets with Coffman taking the second set 7-5 after falling 6-3 in the first.

The two had a nip-and-tuck battle in the third set as Pieratt clinched the match for the Bobcats 7-1 in a tiebreaker.

Midwestern State claimed the doubles' point as junior Kayla Casey teamed with Coffman for a 7-5 win over Katy Collins and Eva Dench at No. 1 while junior Madeline Schorlemmer and sophomore Paige Boykin fought for a 7-5 victory over Pieratt and Shannon Beckett at the No. 3 position.

Casey also claimed a straight set win over Texas State's Ana Laura Gutierra 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot, while sophomore Courtney Anderson rolled to her eighth consecutive win beating Dench 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.
