Mustangs blast St. Edward's 8-1 in regional rematch

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State battered 34th-ranked St. Edward's (Texas) 8-1 in a rematch of the 2014 South Central Region finals Friday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs' 25th consecutive home win was much wider than the 5-4 decision they earned over the Hilltoppers to advance to the Sweet Sixteen last May.

Midwestern used a doubles' sweep to take control of the match as Tomas Grejtak and Ramon Toyos combined for an 8-5 win voer Felix Bake and Ricardo Pineda at No. 1, Kacper Boborykin and Kyle Davids beat Patrick Clynes and Maximo Agoglia 8-2 at No. 2 and Zack Santagate and Chris Norrie bested Sortiris Tsiumas and Davor Ivkovic 8-3 at No. 3.

Toyos put the Mustangs on the brink of clinching the win by improving to 15-4 in singles play with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Pineda at the No. 3 spot.

Norrie would score the clincher with a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 win over Agoglia at No. 4 to improve to an impressive 14-5 overall in singles play this season.

Davidson came back to defeat Bake 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while St. Edward's claimed its lone win at No. 1 as Clynes defeated Boborykin 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Freshman Matt Tyer and Grejtak finished off wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots for the Mustangs.

Midwestern State (14-5) takes on Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday afternoon on the road. First service is set for 2 p.m.

St. Edward's dropped to 5-8 on the season.
