COMMERCE, Texas -- Monica Cherry's RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled Texas A&M-Commerce to a 4-3 win over Midwestern State in Game 1 Saturday afternoon at John Cain Family Field.
It was the third consecutive one-run game between the teams which split a Friday twin bill. The final game of the four-game series is set for later in the afternoon.
Texas A&M-Commerce struck for a pair of solo home runs by Aundria Zunigia-Romero and Johnna Sturm to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
The Mustangs rallied to tie the game on two occasions after finding the scoreboard on an odd rally in the third inning.
Sophomore
Erin Knox roped a leadoff triple down the right-field line, but failed to score when
Paige Stevens and
Haley Howerton reached on consecutive bunt hits before
Katelyn Vinson finally delivered the run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
MSU drew even at 2-2 in the fourth as junior second baseman
Shelby Carter drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner K.D. Kyle, who stole second and scored on Knox's double to center field.
Texas A&M-Commerce answered with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 3-2 advantage.
MSU senior shortstop
Katy Vandewater launched her 10th homer of the season over the left-field fence to knot the game at 3-3.
Once again, the Lions had a response as Cherry rolled a two-out single up the middle to plate Kylene Hatton, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning for the game winning run.
Midwestern threatened in the top of the seventh as Stevens reached on a one-out single up the middle and Howerton drew a walk, but Vinson rolled into a double play to end the game.
Stevens, Vandewater and Knox had two hits each to pace the Mustangs' seven-hit attack.
Sophomore
Katlyn Holmes took the loss in the circle to fall to 9-8 on the season. She allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.
