COMMERCE, Texas -- Texas A&M-Commerce's Luci Ponce trotted home carrying the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Lions to a 7-6 victory over Midwestern State in nightcap Friday at John Cain Family Field.
The Mustangs fell to 20-16 and 7-11 in Lone Star Conference play, while Texas A&M-Commerce improved to 21-18 and 10-10. MSU claimed Game 1 by a score of 5-4 earlier in the afternoon.
The teams close the four-game series with a twin bill Saturday at Cain Family Field at 4 and 6 p.m.
MSU sophomore
Erin Knox staked the Mustangs to a 6-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning with her fifth homer of the season over the left-field fence.
Sophomore
Taylor Bermudes reached on a one-out bunt after Texas A&M-Commerce starter Courtney Moore mishandled the ball. Bermudes beat the throw to second allowing
Katelyn Potts to reach on a fielder's choice.
Moore struck out the pinch hitting
Chelsey Wall before giving Knox's fifth homer of the season on a 1-1 offering.
But the Mustangs were unable to hold the lead as A&M-C drew a pair of walks and Kylene Hatton followed with her first homer of the season over the right-fence to knot the game at 6-6.
It was MSU's second extra game of the season and first since falling 4-3 to Tarleton State in eight innings on March 23 in Stephenville.
Midwestern was stung by the base on balls in the 10th inning as once Ponce and Hatton drew free passes and successfully pulled off a double steal to give the Lions two runners in scoring position with one out.
MSU starter
Tayler Jerrick recorded ninth strikeout of the night getting Monica Cherry swining, but uncorked her second wild pitch of the contest on her first pitch to the next batter allowing Ponce to score.
Jerrick took the loss to fall to 5-4 on the season allowing seven runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and five walks in 9 2/3 innings.
The game matched the fourth longest games by innings in program history and was the longest since the Mustangs were stretched to 10 innings against Southern Arkansas last season.
Midwestern has played in 11-inning contests on four occasions.
The Mustangs plated a single run in the first and two in the third while Texas A&M-Commerce matched the total with one in the second and two in the third.
Junior outfielder
Haley Howerton joined senior shortstop
Katy Vandewater and Bermudes with two hits each to pace MSU's nine-hit attack.
