CANYON, Texas — No. 1 West Texas A&M blitzed Midwestern State for a pair of run-rule victories in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Schaeffer Park.
The Lady Buffs scored a 10-1 win in the opener before polishing off a 19-2 rout in Game 2 to complete the sweep. Both games were over after five innings.
The Mustangs, who had their 10-game winning streak snapped, fell to 13-6 on the season while West Texas A&M improved to 14-2.
MSU senior third baseman
Kelley Schaefer accounted for MSU's lone hit in the opener connecting on her first home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning.
The Mustangs aided WT's 11-hit attack by committing three errors as WT scored a single run in the first and seven runs in the second before Kaisha Dacosin and Lacey Taylor connected for back-to-back homers in the fourth to close out scoring.
Sophomore
Tayler Jerrick took the loss in the circle allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in four innings to fall to 2-2 on the season.
West Texas A&M continued the onslaught in Game 2 accounting for four runs in the first, seven in the second and eight in the third as Dacosin drove in four runs while Taylor, Allie Smith and Brittany Gehle all drove in three runs for the Lady Buffs.
Midwestern accounted for both of its two runs in the fourth as
Katelyn Potts lead off the frame with an infield single and advanced to third on
Chelsey Wall's pinch-hit double to the left-field gap both would come around to score on an RBI-groundout by
Baylee Voigt and a sacrifice fly by
Haley Howerton.
Sophomore Katelyn Holmes fell to 7-3 in the circle permitting 15 runs on 16 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Potts and senior shortstop
Katy Vandewater each had two hits to pace the MSU attack.
Midwestern State and West Texas A&M complete the four-game set with another twin bill Saturday at Schaeffer Park. First pitches are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
