It's an Alamo City split for Mustangs

SAN ANTONIO -- Midwestern State rebounded from a close 4-3 loss to Division I Nicholls State (La.) to dominate Trinity (Texas) 7-2 Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who moved to 11-5 on the season, take on the 8th-ranked junior college side in the nation in Laredo CC Saturday in Kingsville. First serve is set for 10 a.m.

MSU controlled the upper half of singles play against Nicholls State led by seniors Kacper Boborykin and Kyle Davidson, who claimed straight-set wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.

Sophomore Ramon Toyos put the Mustangs within one win of the clinched by outlasting Evan Karatzas 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 position.

MSU sophomore Chris Norrie stretched Bernard Wezeman to three sets at No. 4 before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The Colonels clinched the victory by taking victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots.

MSU senior Tomas Grejtak teamed with Toyos to give the Mustangs their lone doubles win over Partha Adovely and Lukas Clemens 8-7 at the No. 1 spot.

Midwestern swept all six singles contests later in the afternoon against Trinity, which is ranked 7th in NCAA Division III.

Boborykin rolled past Jordan Mayer 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 and Davidson beat Clayton Niess 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 while Toyos doubled up Chas Mayer 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Norrie defeated Kevin Lee 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

Freshman Matt Tyer rolled past Eliot Guin 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Grejtak completed the singles' sweep with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alvaro Hobbs at No. 6.

Boborykin and Davidson pulled the Mustangs to within 2-1 following doubles play taking an 8-4 decision over Chas Mayer and Guin at No. 2.

Nicholls State improved to 6-7 on the season, while Trinity dropped to 10-7.
