WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Senior
Kacper Boborykin set the tone while junior
Kyle Davidson flashed the finishing skill to carry 14th-ranked Midwestern State to a 6-3 win over No. 19 Northwest Missouri State Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
"KB came out with good energy and showed positive leadership," MSU coach
Scott Linn said. "Kyle just refused to lose today. He remained focused even after giving up four match points then took advantage of his opponent's weaknesses to get separation in the third set."
The Mustangs, who improved to 10-4 on the season while extending their home course winning streak to 23 matches, received another lift.
"The men's soccer team really gave us a lift with 30 minutes of really good tennis," Linn said. "That gave us a great home court advantage and really seemed to rattle a few of their guys."
Boborykin dominated the opening set over 34th-ranked Romain Boissinot 6-0, but ended up earning a hard-fought win splitting the final two sets in tiebreakers at the No. 1 singles position.
That came just just after Davidson clinched the victory with 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win over 43rd-ranked Mauro Tete at No. 2.
Midwestern took a 2-1 lead out of doubles powered by wins by Boborykin and Davidson over Boissinot and Tete 8-2 at No. 2 doubles while junior
Zack Santagate and sophomore
Chris Norrie combined for an 8-6 victory over Fin Glowick and Josef Altman at No. 3.
It was Santagate and Norrie's first doubles pairing together.
Sophomore
Ramon Toyos pushed the MSU lead to 3-1 by taking a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alvaro Riveros at No. 3 singles before Norrie put the Mustangs within one of clinching with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Altman at the No. 4 spot.
The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for the Bearcats, who fell to 8-5 on the season.
Midwestern State takes on Division I Nicholls State (La.) Friday morning in San Antonio before playing Division III power Trinity (Texas) in the afternoon.
