PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Midwestern State's
Tomas Grejtak and
Ramon Toyos gave the Mustangs their lone highlight Friday morning in an 8-1 loss to No. 8 St. Leo (Fla.) at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
The duo defeated Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas 8-3 at the No. 2 doubles position to improve to 8-1 on the season as a tandem.
The Mustangs complete their spring break trip with losses against two of three nationally ranked squad to fall to 9-4 on the season.
Grejtak and Toyos gave MSU the early 1-0 lead, but St. Leo's Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne evened the match shortly after beating
Kacper Boborykin and
Chris Norrie 8-3 at the doubles position.
The Lions surged ahead 2-1 after Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti edged MSU's
Kyle Davidson and
Zack Santagate at the No. 1 spot.
St. Leo's used three straight-set victories in singles to clinch the win as Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio beat
Keegan Sullivan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, Vanelven defeated Norrie 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and Panyushkin won over Davison 6-4, 6-3.
Toyos extended Alcabas into a third set before falling 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, while MSU's Boborykin couldn't ride early momentum at the No. 1 spot succumbing to Theiler 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Midwestern State freshman
Matt Tyer battled Verberne into a tiebreaker in the opening set at No. 6 before losing 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
The Mustangs return action on Wednesday facing Northwest Missouri State at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
