TYLER, Texas -- No. 16 Midwestern State dropped its first dual match of the season 7-2 to Tyler Junior College Monday morning at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center.
The Apaches, who are ranked No. 3 in the ITA preseason junior college rankings, improved to 2-1 on the season while the Mustangs fell to 1-1.
Sophomores
Chris Norrie and
Keegan Sullivan claimed victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 singles' positions, respectively, to put MSU on the board.
Norrie recovered from a 7-5 loss in the opening set and rallied to beat TJC sophomore John King 6-2 in the second set before claiming a 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker.
Sullivan rolled past Logan Powell in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Apaches swept doubles' play as No. 4-ranked Vaughn Hunter and Matthew Roussouw upended
Kyle Davidson and
Zack Santagate 8-6 at No. 1, Zach Northey/Powell beat
Kacper Boborykin and
Matt Tyer 8-5 at No. 2 and King/Ciro Lampasas defeated
Daniel Gallivoda and Norrie 8-2 at No. 3.
Tyler JC, which is loaded with four nationally ranked players at the top four singles' positions, claimed four singles' victories to put away the match.
Midwestern State takes on Texas-Tyler Monday afternoon before playing host to Hardin-Simmons Friday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
