WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State blasted highly regarded Collin College 9-0 in its season opener Friday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Cougars carried the No. 7 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason Junior/Community College national rankings, but were no matched for the 16th-ranked Mustangs.
MSU swept through doubles play as juniors
Kyle Davidson and
Zack Santagate beat CC's Brandon Yang and Josh McKinney at No. 1, while senior
Kacper Boborykin teamed with freshman
Matt Tyer to beat Landon Ibbott and Jack Riess at No. 2 as the Mustangs won both position by an 8-1 margin.
Sophomore
Chris Norrie and redshirt-freshman
Daniel Gallivoda put MSU up 3-0 with a solid 8-2 win over Zach Pitman and Patrick Nguyen at No. 3.
The Mustangs claimed straight-set wins at the top five singles' spots with Boborykin beating Yang 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1, Davidson defeating Riess 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, sophomore
Ramon Toyos trouncing Pitman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Gallivoda routing McKinney 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 and Norrie beating Ibbott 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
Tyer split sets against Ibbott at No. 5 before completing the sweep 6-2, 5-7, 10-1.
Midwestern State hits the road for a doubleheader Monday in Tyler. The Mustangs take on Tyler Junior College at 9 a.m. before battling NCAA Division III Texas-Tyler at 3 p.m.
