SAN ANTONIO -- No. 16 Midwestern State took its first NCAA Division II opponent of the 2015 season rolling to an 8-1 win over Texas-Permian Saturday morning at Rohrbach Stadium.
The Mustangs, who improved to 4-2 on the season, roared out to a 3-0 lead with three comfortable victories in doubles.
No. 17-ranked
Kyle Davidson and
Zack Santagate held off UTPB's Justin Pena and Adam Cheyney 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while
Kacper Boborykin and
Matt Tyer teamed to take down Thomas Rice and Caio Aguilar 8-1 at No. 2.
Tomas Grejtak and
Ramon Toyos completed the sweep with a convincing 8-2 win over Devon Douglis and Leo Luna at No. 3.
Midwestern rolled to straight-set wins at the top five singles positions headed by Boborykin's 6-1, 6-1 win over Pena at No. 1.
Davidson, who carries NCAA Division II's No. 32 singles ranking, blasted Rice 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, while Toyos dominated for a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Douglis at No. 3.
Tyer rolled past Luna 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4, while MSU sophomore
Chris Norrie defeated Texas-Permian Basin's Ismael Quinones 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5.
Aguilar kept the Falcons from a blanking by holding off MSU's Santagate 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
MSU returns to action Friday against Metropolitan State (Colo.) before taking on Colorado Mesa and Western New Mexico on Saturday. All matches next weekend are set for Albuquerque, N.M.
UTPB dipped to 2-3 on the season.
