MANSFIELD, Texas — Midwestern State stretched its winning streak to nine games with wins over Baker (Kan.) (10-0) and Oklahoma Panhandle State (7-4) Friday afternoon in the North Texas Softball Bash at James McKnight Park.
The Mustangs (12-4) close tournament play Saturday morning against Lubbock Christian (Texas). First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
Shelby Carter and
Katy Vandewater keyed a late inning surge as both connected for three-run homers as MSU broke open a 1-0 game with five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Sophomore
Tayler Jerrick (2-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before settling for a two-hit shutout. It was her second shutout of the season as Jerrick notched a season-high nine strikeouts against the NAIA foe.
Junior outfielder
Paige Stevens, who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, put the Mustangs on the board in the third inning when she roped a double into the left-field gap to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
That would be the only run the Mustangs would muster off of Baker starter Mallorie Nelson, who allowed one run on one hit before exiting after five innings in the circle.
Midwestern jumped all over BU reliever Teagan Louthan for nine runs — five earned — on six hits over the final two frames.
Stevens ignited the rally in the sixth with her second two-bagger of the game, reached third on
Haley Howerton's bunt single and scored on
Kelley Schaefer's sacrifice fly to deep right field.
Vandewater followed with an RBI-single through the left side of the infield before Carter launched her second homer of the season over the left-field fence.
The Mustangs took advantage of three Baker errors in a four-run seventh inning highlighted by Vandewater's sixth round tripper of the season — a three-run blast to left field.
MSU raced out to a 6-0 lead against Oklahoma Panhandle State plating single runs in the first and third innings before rallying for two runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
But the Aggies rallied for runs in the tops of the sixth to climb back into the game.
Junior
Katelyn Vinson paced the MSU attack going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs driving in runs in the first and fourth innings.
Sophomore
Taylor Bermudes added three hits including a an RBI double in the third inning, while senior
Katelyn Potts delivered a two-run single in the fifth.
Oklahoma Panhandle took advantage of an error and a tight strike zone in the sixth to rally for four runs to pull within two runs at 6-4.
MSU starter
Erin Knox (4-1) permitted four runs — one earned — on five hits in 5 2/3 innings before giving way to
Katlyn Holmes who pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn her first save of the season.
The Mustangs added an unearned run in the sixth as Vandewater walked and advanced to third on Bermudes' second double of the game then continued to the plate when OPSU's throw from the outfield got away from the catcher to give the Mustangs a three-run edge.
