Mustangs clobber Colorado Mesa for fourth straight win

CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State's Katy Vandewater homered and drove in four runs to lead the Mustangs to a 9-1 run-rule win over Colorado Mesa Sunday morning in WT's Woodward Invitational at Buffalo Sports Park.

The senior from Arlington belted a three-run shot over the left-field fence in the first inning to give the Mustangs the early lead as she match Katelyn Vinson for team-high honors with three.

Midwestern loaded the bases in the second inning before Haley Howerton and Vinson hit back-to-back run scoring singles before Kelley Schaefer drew a bases loaded walk to give the Mustangs a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Colorado Mesa's lone run of the game was unearned in the top of the inning. Sarah Phillips reached on an infield single to leadoff the frame, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a throwing error.

MSU sophomore Erin Knox blasted her third homer of the season over the center field fence in the third inning to push the lead to 7-1.

Howerton roped a triple to the right-field gap to lead off the fourth inning then came around to score when Vandewater reached on a fielder's choice.

The Mustangs clinched the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Emily Lasky extended her hitting streak to four game with a leadoff double to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on freshman Cheyenne Fisk's first collegiate hit -- a single to left field.

Knox improved to 2-1 in the circle allowing an unearned run on six hits in five innings of work.

Howerton and Knox had two hits each to pace MSU's nine-hit attack.

The Mustangs close out tournament play Sunday afternoon against Adams State (Colo.).

Colorado Mesa dropped to 4-7 on the season.
