CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State erupted for a school-record 12 runs in the sixth inning to roll to a 17-1 win over Adams State (Colo.) to close out play in the WT Woodward Invitational Sunday at the Buffalo Sports Park.
The Mustangs closed tournament play with a 5-1 mark while moving to 8-4 on the season.
Sophomore outfielder
Taylor Bermudes matched a school single-game record with two triples equaling the feat set by Allison Tidwell (2004), Kortney Kemper (2004) and
Courtney Bingham (2011).
Junior outfielder
Haley Howerton also tied a school single-game record scoring four runs joining Maranda Bishop and
Katelyn Vinson who plated as many runs in 2009 and 2013, respectively.
The Mustangs sent 16 girls to the plate in the sixth inning slamming out eight hits highlighted by Vinson's three-run blast over the left-field fence while
Katy Vandewater added a two-run double and Bermudes knocked two on her second three-bagger of the game.
Midwestern smashed six extra-base hits including doubles by
Paige Stevens and Vandewater and set another program record with three triples with Howerton adding another in the third frame to go along with Vinson's team leading fourth homer of the season.
Adams State struck first with an unearned run in the first inning before the Mustangs got the offense rolling in the third inning.
Stevens legged out an infield and scored on Howerton's triple through the left side of the infield.
Senior third baseman
Kelley Schaefer chased Howerton in with an RBI-single down the right-field line before Vandewater reached on an error.
Bermudes followed with her first triple to the right field gap to plate two more runs to give MSU a 4-1 lead.
Bermudes, who finished with a career-best five RBIs, drove in another run in the fifth on a single to center field before the Mustangs closed out the game with a 12-run sixth.
Sophomore pitcher
Katlyn Holmes moved to 5-2 on the season limiting the Grizzlies to an unearned run on three hits in the complete game victory.
Midwestern State competes in the Mansfield North Texas Softball Bash Thursday, Friday and Saturday at James McKnight Park. The Mustangs take on Lubbock Christian and Texas-Permian Basin Thursday at 1 and 3 p.m.
