Mustangs take opening day split at WT's Woodward Invitational

CANYON, Texas -- Midwestern State riddled Chadron State with six extra-base hits to roll to a 15-7 run-rule win in six innings Friday in the West Texas A&M Woodward Invitational at Buffalo Sports Park.
 
The win evened the Mustangs' record at 4-4 overall and in tournament play at 1-1 after MSU took a 4-3 loss to Metropolitan State (Colo.) earlier in the afternoon.
 
MSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first against  Chadron State keyed by a two-run single by Katy Vandewater and a two-run triple down the right-field line by Baylee Voigt before Chelsey Wall laced an RBI single down the right-field line.
 
It was the first of three consecutive hits for Wall, who finished the game going 3-for-3 with three RBIs to pace MSU's 12-hit attack.
 
Katelyn Potts and Wall hit back-to-back doubles to highlight a three-run third inning to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead.
 
Chadron State extended the game by scoring four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth before the Mustangs finally closed out the run-rule in the sixth.
 
Sophomore Emily Lasky two-run double highlighted a three-run fourth inning, while sophomore Taylor Bermudes drilled a run-scoring triple to center field to spur a two-run fourth then tacked on an RBI-double as part of a two-run sixth to close out the game.
 
Sophomore Katlyn Holmes earned the win the circle to improve to 3-1 despite allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and four walks in six innings.
 
Metropolitan State cashed in on MSU's lone error in the opener to plate the winning run in the top of the seventh to come away with a 4-3 win earlier Friday afternoon.
 
MSU-D's Mary Towner reached on an error and was pulled for pinch runner Taryn Calori, who advanced to second on an a sacrifice bunt by Kaylynn Harmon.
 
Lani Redmond finished off a 4-for-4 day at the dish by lacing a triple to the right-center field gap to plate Calori as the winning run.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to the early lead by plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning keyed by Katelyn Vinson's RBI single up the middle before Vandewater drilled a two-run double down the left-field line to give MSU a 3-0 lead.
 
Metro State countered with three runs in the third inning keyed by Towner's two-run double to the left-field gap.
 
Sophomore Tayler Jerrick took the loss for the Mustangs to fall to 1-2 on the season. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.
 
Junior outfielder Paige Stevens had three hits to pace MSU's nine-hit attack while Vandewater went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
 
Midwestern State continues Woodward Invitational play with games against Colorado Mines and Colorado State-Pueblo Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., respectively.
 
The Mustangs close tournament play Sunday with competitions against Colorado Mesa at 10:30 a.m. and Adams State (Colo.) at 3 p.m.
