KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Thursday evening that Midwestern State senior forward
Albert Rodriguez and junior midfielder
Flavio Guzman were selected as two of 40 student-athletes from across the nation to earn NSCAA NCAA Division II Men's Soccer All-America honors.
Rodriguez and Guzman become the 40th and 41st Midwestern State men's soccer all-Americans dating back to 1977 when David Wooley earned the first honor with NAIA First Team All-America status.
Midwestern State earned multiple NSCAA All-Americans for just the third time in program history Thursday. In 1988, Parker Cowand and Mark Warrior were both tabbed first teamers while Daniel Woolard was a first team selection and Brandon Swartzendruber a second team pick in 2006.
Rodriguez is the 20th player in MSU men's soccer history to garner first team all-American status, and just the sixth NSCAA First Team All-America selection for the Mustangs. He is the first MSU player to capture first team accolades since 2010 when
Ryan Spence, Raul Herrera and Nathan Fitzgerald were named Daktronics First Team All-Americans following MSU's NCAA Final Four run. Rodriguez is the first NSCAA first teamer since Woolard earned the distinction in 2006.
Rodriguez had a breakout senior campaign, leading the region in six offensive categories and ranking in the top 15 nationally in seven categories with 17 goals, eight assists and 42 points in 2015.
A native of Oak Cliff, Rodriguez inked his name into the program's record books, ranking fifth in single-season goals and eighth in single-season points. His team-best five game-winning goals was also good enough for fifth in the MSU record books.
In just two seasons in the Maroon and Gold, Rodriguez totaled 22 goals, 10 assists, 54 points, 164 shots and 70 shots on goal. He finished sixth in the record books in career shots, seventh in shots on goal, 29th in goals and 33rd in points. He also appeared at sixth with seven game winners during his career.
Guzman quickly announced his presence at the NCAA Division II level this season after redshirting his first season with the Mustangs in 2014. The center mid was second for the Mustangs in scoring with 10 goals and 24 points while starting in all 19 matches.
The Oak Cliff native tallied two game-winning goals this season including one over then-No. 6 St. Edward's in a comeback win for the Mustangs. Guzman ranked seventh in the region in both total goals and points and was 51st nationally in goals scored and 67th in points.
It was quite a week for Rodriguez and Guzman after both also collected all-region first team accolades from the NSCAA and the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA).
The MSU duo were two of four student-athletes to earn all-America honors from the South Central Region, being joined by Colorado Mines' Nikolaus Grotz (3rd team) and St. Edward's Josh Taylor (3rd team).
Rodriguez and Guzman paced the Mustangs to a 17-1-1 record in 2015 with a trip to the South Central Region title match before a 4-3 overtime defeat to Colorado Mines. The Mustangs recorded just their third undefeated regular season in the program's 44 years while securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history.
