WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Tarleton State sophomore outside hitter Hailey Roberts recorded 19 kills to lead the TexAnns to a 3-0 victory (27-25, 26-24, 25-18) over the Midwestern State volleyball team Friday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Roberts also tallied 13 digs for the double-double while senior outside hitter Xzache Mathis contributed 10 kills for the Tarleton State (24-5, 14-1 LSC) offense.
For Midwestern State (6-25, 0-15 LSC), freshman middle blocker
Kiley Beaver totaled 10 kills on a team-best .429 hitting percentage with just one error while freshman middle blocker
Olivia Schiffner also added 10 kills for the Mustangs.
In the opening set, MSU roared out to a 9-3 lead following back-to-back service aces from freshman setter
Kendall Chamberlain and a TSU attack error. The Mustangs held off several rallies by the TexAnns before the visitors went on top at 18-17 after a Roberts kill.
A 4-0 spurt for MSU put the Mustangs back in front as Schiffner and freshman setter
Hayden Blair aided the Midwestern run. A stuff by sophomore middle blocker
Addison Semer gave the Mustangs set point at 25-24 but back-to-back kills from Roberts and a TSU block gave the TexAnns a 27-25 first set win.
Midwestern State opened the second set on an 8-4 run before TSU evened the frame at nine apiece after an MSU attack error. The set remained close the entire way with the teams deadlocked at 24-all. Out of a TSU timeout, the TexAnns recorded two kills to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 26-24 victory.
TSU broke open the third set with a 4-0 run midway through the frame to grab a 16-10 advantage following two-straight MSU errors. The TexAnns built their lead to as many as nine points before holding off a late MSU run to earn a 25-18 win.
Midwestern State closes out the season Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Mustangs host Angelo State for Senior Day at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Prior to the match, the Mustangs will honor the team's lone senior,
Hunter Porter.
