Mustangs fall to Angelo State on Senior Day

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Angelo State jumped out on the Midwestern State volleyball team with a commanding first set win while holding the Mustangs to a .038 hitting percentage in a 3-0 victory (25-9, 25-19, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Prior to the match, Midwestern State honored senior outside hitter Hunter Porter, who played her final match as a Mustang. Porter concluded her two-year career at MSU with 476 kills.

Angelo State (28-5, 14-2 LSC) carried the momentum early by taking a 14-2 advantage in the first set behind a balanced offensive attack. The Rambelles continued to run away from the Mustangs late before going on to claim a 25-9 opening set victory.

Midwestern State (6-26, 0-16 LSC) stayed close to the Rambelles in the second set, answering every ASU run. Trailing 18-13, the Mustangs pulled back within two with freshman middle blocker Kiley Beaver registering a kill and a block to make it 18-16.

A 4-0 run by the Rambelles was sparked by three-straight kills from junior outside hitter Mallory Blauser for a 22-16 lead in the second frame. The Mustangs were only able to pull back within four before ASU recorded a 25-19 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Rambelles began the third set much like the first with a 12-3 run behind four kills from sophomore outside hitter Brianna Sotello. Midwestern refused to go away quietly as the Mustangs trimmed their deficit down to five at 20-15 following a kill by sophomore middle blocker Addison Semer. However, the early deficit was too much for the Mustangs to overcome late as ASU finished out a 25-18 third set win to earn the sweep.

Beaver, sophomore outside hitter Meghan Bettis and freshman middle blocker Olivia Schiffner each recorded four kills to lead the Mustangs. Defensively, junior libero Madelyn Johnson tallied 11 digs for MSU.

Sotello recorded a team-high 13 kills on a .345 hitting percentage for ASU while also adding 13 digs for the double-double.
