Mustangs fall to Texas Woman's in Friday action

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A balanced attack and a .285 hitting percentage helped Texas Woman's to a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) over the Midwestern State volleyball team Friday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

While the Pioneers tallied just seven hitting errors for the match, Midwestern State (4-12, 0-4 LSC) was held to a .139 attack percentage while being out-blocked 7-1. Freshman middle blocker Olivia Schiffner totaled a team-high nine kills on a .200 clip to lead the Mustangs. Defensively, freshman libero Matti Dix paced the squad with 17 digs while freshman setter Hayden Blair tallied her team-best eighth double-double of the season with 26 assists and 14 digs.

In the first set, three-straight attack errors by the Mustangs followed by three service aces from Texas Woman's (11-3, 4-1 LSC) helped the Pioneers take an early 9-3 lead to force a Midwestern State timeout. The Pioneers continued to stretch their lead on the Mustangs, opening up at 17-6 advantage before going on to claim a 25-15 first set win.

A rejection from sophomore middle blocker Angel Summers and sophomore outside hitter Addison Semer gave Midwestern a 6-5 lead in the early stages of the second set. However, the Pioneers put together a quick 4-0 spurt to reclaim the lead at 9-6. TWU only allowed the Mustangs to come back within two before the Pioneers extended their lead out late to take a 25-17 win.

After the Pioneers went on top 3-0 in the third set, the Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run capped off by an ace from junior defensive specialist Madelyn Johnson. It was a tight set throughout as the teams answered each other point-for-point. With the Mustangs holding an 18-17 lead, TWU claimed a 22-18 advantage as errors doomed Midwestern down the stretch. The Mustangs were unable to put together a late rally as back-to-back kills gave the Pioneers a 25-20 third set win and the sweep.

Sara Oxford led TWU with 11 kills while Makayla Mayfield and Mallory Kuechle added eight apiece.

Midwestern hosts Texas A&M-Commerce and Dallas Baptist in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
