Offensive struggles hurt Mustangs in loss to TAMUC

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Texas A&M-Commerce won a decisive first set before holding off the Midwestern State volleyball team in sets two and three to earn a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-23, 25-23) Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

It was a poor offensive outing for both squads as TAMUC hit just .033 while Midwestern was held to -.038.

The Mustangs got off to a strong start in the first set at 3-0 before the Lions answered with a 4-0 run to take over the lead. After a kill by sophomore outside hitter Meghan Bettis evened the set up at 12-all, TAMUC (11-5, 4-2 LSC) took a 16-12 advantage with a kill from Summer Alford and three errors by the Mustangs. Midwestern (4-13, 0-5 LSC) would only be able to pull back within two points before the Lions came away with a 25-18 first set victory.

In the second set, TAMUC opened up the frame with an 11-2 run. However, the Mustangs stormed back midway through the set to make it a two-point contest following three-straight attack errors by the visitors.

With the Lions holding a 20-16 lead, the Mustangs put together a run to move on top at 22-20, sparked by a kill from sophomore middle blocker Angel Summers. TAMUC responded as a service ace by Hannah Dykstra gave the Lions a one-point lead to force a Midwestern timeout late in the set. Two Midwestern errors prevented the Mustangs from taking the set, falling 25-23 to give TAMUC a 2-0 lead.

Midwestern State led throughout the third set, opening up a 5-1 lead in the early going. Kills by senior outside hitter Hunter Porter put the Mustangs up 10-6 before a run by the Lions pulled them within one. The Mustangs continued to stay in front until an attack error evened the frame at 22-all. Kills by Sydney Reyes and Jaryn Wacker helped the Lions cap off the comeback to take the third set for the sweep, 25-23.

Porter and freshman middle blocker Kiley Beaver led Midwestern with five kills apiece while freshman libero Matti Dix totaled a team-best 17 digs.
